i'm pregnant

i always had the time line set out in my head, "get married at 25, have kids at 28..." well, it's not working that way, and while i'm a little...nervous, i'm not regretting my choice. granted it will make life a little harder, and mean we're going to have to make big changes, but really, what is there to lose? i've never been "the party girl", i've never been incredibly social or had a lot going on, what is going on normally involves family or my close friends, and i know that won't change post-baby. everyone i love is just as excited, if not more excited.

we have no plans to get married because i'm pregnant. quite frankly, it just kind of annoy's me when people have been dating for a short time, and get engaged and married just because they're expecting. we talked about getting married before all this, and i know we plan on getting married some day in the future but...i think he feels as though we should get married, or at least engaged, and i'll go for the engaged part, but i don't want to be pregnant when i get married. they don't make cute pregnancy wedding dresses that fit into my "princess theme" i have stuck in my head.

i got called in tonight because the busser who was supposed to work decided last minute she wanted the night off for school. she just had a month and a half off 'for school', and just returned last week, and so i told my boss that that wasn't fair and that i was sick of never knowing when i'll have to work and that i can't take it anymore. and so i put my two weeks in. granted i did it on his voicemail while he and all the staff were at a mandatory meeting i didn't want to attend. if i wasn't going to get paid for being there, then i wasn't gonna go. sorry. it's just bullshit. that girl requested tomorrow and saturday off and wants tonight off too? she was gone six weeks, comes back for one, and wants three days off? fuck that. i've been neck deep in homework, and been going through a lot of hard times this past month and i haven't taken one single day off.

Oro Valley Country Club is always hiring PM bussers. They're open Wednesdays - Sunday, and you'd work three to four days a week, from anytime after 4 until close which is usually around 9:30 (unless you get out early which usually happens once a week). I typically work about 12 hours a week, however if you want to work more you can. Starting pay is $6 and they hire pretty much anyone, experienced or not. They're awesome about letting you have time off, just as long as you put in nine days notice you're pretty much guaranteed to have it off.

I really love my job and the people I work with are so awesome that I'm sad to have to leave them, but college is a really heavy load in its self and right now I just need to spend my time focusing on that before I have a stress induced emotional breakdown.

The 7th Annual Komen
Southern Arizona Race For The Cure
NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

right now they are about 200 people short, and could really use some help. it's on Sunday, April 10th and volunteers need to be there pretty damn early, i'm pretty sure around 5 in the morning. the race and following events (survivors parade and award ceremony) generally end around 10:30, and volunteers normally leave around noon. everyone who participates will get a free shirt, yogurt, water, and there are also many more freebes given out by pizza hut, kellogs, as well as many local companies, tv and radio stations.

i've been doing this for the last three years, and my dad has been doing it for the last five. this year he is the head of the parking and has been getting a lot of his students from st. gregorys to volunteer, as well as me and tina. however as stated above, there are still not enough volunteers and he's asked me to try to get more. so here i am. it does not necessarily mean you'll be working with parking, they need volunteers for all different aspects of the race. be it parking, trash and recycles (i've done that before. got to drive a golf cart all day), passing things out, help guiding people to where they need to be. if you and a friend want to volunteer together and not be separated that can be arranged...if you're interested please IM or email me at HansonFoal@aol.com.

as some of you may know, i'm not a very big fan of waking up early, in fact on the weekends waking up before noon can put me in a bad mood, but honestly working for Race For The Cure makes you feel really good about yourself. it's also something you can put on your college applications, and my dad will be more than happy to be a reference for that if you need him to be.

Local illustrator's medium computes into crisp art

An "art critic" once faked her way onto a major newspaper but was nailed after years of "borrowing on speculation," shall we say, prized paintings from the galleries she covered.
After the firing and institutional humiliation for said paper, I called a writer friend to see if she might like the job. "Know anything about art?"

"Art who?"

Art who, indeed.

The question for today is "Art what?"

Or perhaps: What would van Gogh do?

When your eyes first feast on breathtakingly vivid renderings of Sonoran fauna and flora, though, you don't ask about the medium. You spring to the telephone and inquire, "How much?"

Alas, this art isn't for sale. It's only for free to students, staff and friends of Pima Community College.

Our free copy almost got tossed. "No thanks," I told an editor. "I already have a calendar."

Then I unfurled the PCC version and gasped in wonder.

These pictures snap, crackle and pop with bold hues and precision accuracy.

Shannon McBride-Olson is cited for "illustration and design," but that understates her work.

She credits computer technology, but that, too, is misleading.

For while Shannon amends and polishes her art on the computer, those are only finishing touches after considerable preparation.

This woman has the eye, don't you know, and the artist's skills to go with it.

Walking along the Rillito, usually with her two dogs and husband, one of them (the humans, that is) will snap photos of the most eye-catching weeds, blossoms, cactuses, insects, birds and animals.

Sans camera, Shannon might pluck a blossom or two so she can replicate it nicely in a drawing.

The spouse is big on shooting sunsets and sunrises, so she sometimes borrows snatches of sky from his photos.

When she goes to work at PCC Media Production and Publications, she draws. She chooses assorted matrixes of colors. She selects various shapes.

Then, piece by excruciatingly tiny piece, she will pick up a feather of a particular shape, apply her chosen color matrix, and drop it deep into the bold strokes of her pre-drawn owl.

The process will be repeated seemingly forever, until her owl is finely feathered and his eyes, on which she has worked the hardest, are peering straight through you, as only an owl's eyes can.

At first, the casual observer doesn't notice the fine detail in this flurry of feathers. You would be hard-pressed to find two alike or even two with the same color combination.
So while Shannon's art is perfected on a computer, it evokes sensations as real - perhaps more so - as those prompted by a "regular" painting.

She has studied at multiple venues, from the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Va., to East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., where she majored in the obscure art of stone lithography.

Patience, persistence and a punchy palette of colors define her work.

But back to the big questions, on "art what" and Vincent van Gogh. Shannon believes any artist would appreciate this "extremely different" medium.

"You have to learn a lot about these computers' technical applications before you can mimic a brushstroke," she notes. "You can make a drawing look like a watercolor, for instance. I see no sense in that."

What stimulates her is the "crispness, focus" she can achieve on the computer.

This is a woman who loves her job, working for an educational institution. "We try to help people figure out how to better their lives," she notes.

Even when urged to market her work, Shannon McBride-Olson only says, "This is a nice place to be an artist. Money really isn't my point."

Surely van Gogh could relate to that.

sometimes i wonder what happened to me and where it was i lost myself. because it's gotten to the point where even strangers point out my bad attitude.

i'm sorry i seem so grumpy. and i'm sorry i'm not an underclassman that's willing to be so fake and kiss so much ass just so they can get the slightest bit of attention. and that i can't talk my mouth off all the time about the most irrelevant subjects and batt my eyelashes so much that it looks like i have a disorder or something stuck in my eye. or that i don't run around so much that it leaves you to question whether or not i'm on speed. i'm sorry i can't compete with that. i really am.

but as for me, i talk when i feel like it. i laugh when i feel like it. i bounce around when i feel like it. but nothing this year (literally) has given me the opportunity to feel like doing any of that. and i'm sorry, but i don't need every fucking person in the world telling me how grumpy i am. it's not like that's going to make me feel any better, infact it makes me feel worse because i know i'm different, i know this isn't me, this isn't who i want to be and no matter how hard i try i just can't go back to being who i was. and believe me, i've tried. but you'd think of all things my friends would try to do something to change that, but instead the only time i really feel relaxed and am able to smile is when i'm in my econ class, which ironically, is the class i hate the most.
